The power of pomegranates

Superfoods are ten a penny these days. Rich in nutrients, packed with goodness and proven to give your body and your health a much needed.  

There are many different types of superfoods, each make many different claims. Most are good for you in their own way. But you don’t have go super exotic or hunt down a seed you’ve never heard of to get big health benefits. 

The little pomegranate delivers more than its fair share. It packs a powerful punch of vitamins and fibre, and a regular handful of these little pink jewels could prevent heart disease, high blood pressure and even certain types of cancers.

The benefits of the pomegranate:

High in potassium

Potassium is great at fighting kidney diseases and protecting you against dialysis-related infections.

Rich in nitrates

This is great for your muscles! Nitrates support blood vessel nitric acid balance within your tissues that demand a significant amount of oxygen. That means they’re essential to help your muscles function effectively.

Anti-inflammatory effects

The punicalagins (a plant compound/antioxidant) inside pomegranates have powerful anti-inflammatory properties that can help your digestive tract and prevent colon cancer cells developing.

Anti-bacterial properties

Because they contain two powerful plant compounds – punicalagins and punicic acid – pomegranates have extremely effective anti-bacterial effects which can help fight against gum and mouth infections.

Strengthens bones

One study suggested that when consumed regularly, pomegranates help strengthen bones and prevent bone problems such as osteoporosis.

Reduces risk of certain cancers

Other studies have shown that pomegranate juice can slow the progress of prostate cancer, while also helping to prevent breast cancer. This is thought to be down to the significant amount of polyphenols in the fruit.

Helps to prevent heart problems

Pomegranate juice also improves blood flow and cuts down on cholesterol found in arteries – both contributing factors in heart problems. 

Combine all these benefits of pomegranates and you have a superfood with the potential to positively affect your entire health and well-being.
